Not only did it bring the series to polygonal 3D and having a mildly enjoyable single-player, but it also innovated and popularized team-based multiplayer that was highly praised to the point it still has a rather strong following in the form of Enemy Territory. So to me at least, Return is the best game of the series. But hey, I am a tad bit nostalgic, so do forgive me. The ambient soundtrack, some of the locations, and art style make the game have a quasi-believable feel despite the fantastical elements, something that the later games would never be able to replicate in favor of coolness. For what it's worth for RTCW, you can still run, crouch, and fire when you come across enemies, stand and continue moving at a normal pace, rinse, repeat.Īnd for all of its gameplay flaws, RTCW makes up for having a good atmosphere and rather grounded feel, for me at least. I see RTCW's handling of its shooting mechanics to be no different from Wolf 3D's door-camping or lean-shooting from the MG games. Even in Wolfenstein 3D, trying to run and gun large packed rooms ala Doom will just result in the player getting mauled very quickly (on lower difficulty settings, maybe that is feasible). Tactical elements like maintaining more accuracy by crouching have always been a focus of Wolfenstein, not just mindless run & gun. The rest of the game can have missions like Norway or the Dam break your cover but you won't fail the mission just makes the level spawn more enemies and make things more difficult. Paderborn isn't that bad though, as there are only two alarms towards the end. The Forest is highly irritating of a level, not gonna lie. There are only two 'Stealth or fail' missions in the entire game the Forest Compound and Paderborn. The console ports of the game do have checkpoints though. Otherwise, this sounds like a personal issue, at least regarding the stealth levels. Making a few normal save games should help before you quicksave at a certain point. The other bosses aren't that much frustrating, I feel. The only boss I've had trouble with is the X-Labs UberSoldat due to the restrictive arena he is in. Staying behind solid cover waiting to draw them out also helps. Strafing while burst-firing the Sten I found to be an effective way of dealing with them. Elite Guards are powerful, but they are not much spongier than later enemies like Venom Troopers or Proto-Soldats. However, I'll try to answer your grievances while trying not to come across as mindless fan: Discuss away.Īs someone who really enjoys RTCW and is quite nostalgic about it since it is one of the first few FPS games I have played, I can understand your frustrations as it is a pretty difficult game for those who never played it before. Because it's above average at best and bad at worst. On the whole, I struggle to see what I others see when they say that this the best game in the series. But even then, that was a health system issue, not an accuracy issue.Īll of these may seem like minor issues, but even if they are, they all add up to make a not very enjoyable experience. This is in stark contrast to almost every other mainline Wolfenstein title, where run and gun was not only doable but encouraged, with the exception of maybe Wolfenstein (2009). It's terrible, unless you stand still and crouch. Thank heavens I can quicksave, but I shouldn't have to do that in the first place, when MachineGames don't fail the player the moment they get spotted in their games.īut perhaps the biggest issue I have with this game, is the shooting accuracy. These are flatout terrible and shouldn't be in any game. So if you quicksave in bad spot without realizing it, back to the start of the mission you go. This ended up being the second worst mainline Wolfenstein game for me, first being Wolfenstein (2009).Įlite guards, Flamethrowers and Bosses are artificially difficult enemies at best, even on the easiest difficulty. With all that in mind, I had high expectations going into this one. Especially since, it's the only mainline title that I hadn't played aside from Youngblood. After having seen quite a few posts saying that this is the best game in the series, I knew I had to try it out.
